“Notre Dame de Paris” is the romantic and tragic story of a great and impossible love story. The lives of a gypsy lady, an archdeacon, a bell ringer and a captain of the guards cross each other. The famous novel of Victor Hugo still passionate minds.
In September 1998, the story becomes a musical on the stage of the Palais des Congrès in Paris. The success comes immediately. The great songwriter Luc Plamondon and the talented composer Richard Cocciante were right – it was one of the best pitches for a musical. The lyrics of Luc Plamondon and the music of Richard Cocciante immediately found their audience, which is not surprising when we consider the beauty of both.
But the success of « Notre-Dame de Paris » is also due to an exceptional casting. At that time some artists already had a great career, others were less known. “Notre Dame de Paris” was a springboard for all of them – an important step for some, and the start of a long career for others. Quickly, the show became very popular in France and abroad. The musical is adapted into several languages and performs worldwide. But the first casting, which is also the most requested, has no longer played for over ten years. Their comeback was really awaited. Despite some rumors, they did not play again, until this famous day where the 7 original singers came back on stage for several concerts dedicated to the original masterpiece of Luc Plamondon and Richard Cocciante. « Belle », « Le temps des cathédrales », « Vivre » were played again in a concert hall.
Thousands of fans followed this event worldwide. Their favorite artists were together again. Supported by a symphonic orchestra with 68 musicians and 40 singers, without the sets or any costumes, the seven singers and their powerful voices were back as well as the musical characters. The three concerts in Paris had an incredible and huge success. There was a tremendous emotion on stage, backstage and in audience. The show left no one indifferent. Exactly as 12 years before, « Le temps des cathédrales » opened the concert. Even if they remained loyal to the original ones, the song took on another dimension with new arrangements made by Guy St-Onge. The video projections and sublime lighting effects highlighted the beautiful voices of the singers. The magic still operated, transporting the audience in the fifteenth century in the famous cathedral.
Fans were prepared for this event – flowers, gifts for the artists, usage of cell phones to enlighten the hall during certain songs: « Lune », « Vivre », « Danse mon Esméralda »… The artists and their fans in tears, it was an exceptional event that will stay in their hearts forever.
